Fighting poverty

We want to help the people in need by giving them access to food and water.

poverty in mauritius

The causes of hunger and malnutrition include poverty, inequalities and natural disasters. Unfortunately, Mauritius has been experiencing all of these in 2020.  Before the COVID-19 pandemic, undernourishment statistics were on an uptrend, growing from 4.8% in 2018 to 6.5% in 2019.[1] The current global pandemic has had a strong negative impact on food supply chains worldwide by simultaneously affecting farm production, food processing, transport and logistics as well as final demand.[2] This, combined with supermarkets closing for several weeks, has increased the levels of poverty and hunger in Mauritius.  In 2017, the World Bank estimated that 10.3% of Mauritians were living in poverty, but this figure will not surprisingly be higher once the pandemic is over.[3]

our vision on this issue

FWH’s main goal is to make sure that the situation does not become too alarming in Mauritius by proving food and water to the people in need. This will help them to improve their living conditions.

Through raising funds but also partnering with local businesses (shops, hotels and restaurants), we plan on collecting and purchasing the products in order to redistribute them, in a sustainable way, to the people.
